Raised teeth behind milk teeth

Permanent teeth erupt and develop behind milk teeth in about 1 in 10 children. Thus, before the baby's teeth have fallen out, the child has two rows of teeth, a phenomenon known as "shark teeth". This association was made not because sharks have sharp teeth, but because they have several rows of teeth.

WHEN, WHERE AND WHY DO “SHARK TEETH” APPEAR?

The phenomenon occurs more frequently in the second period of development of the child's dentition, respectively at 10-11 years, when the upper premolars erupt. However, sometimes "shark teeth" can appear even in the first stage, around the age of 6, at the time of the eruption of the lower incisors.

Lower permanent and temporary incisors

The second row of teeth is usually placed in the area of the lower incisors but may also appear in the area of the upper incisors or milk masses.

CAUSE

During normal development, the permanent tooth buds resorb the root of the baby tooth when it erupts beneath it - a phenomenon known in the dental environment as rizaliza. When the root is almost gone, the baby tooth falls out and the tooth permanently erupts in the free space. If the baby tooth does not fall out, the tooth permanently erupts behind the baby tooth.

Another cause of shark teeth is agglomeration of baby teeth. Thus, permanent teeth, especially the wider incisors, do not have room to erupt and erupt behind the milk incisors.

WHAT TO DO?

Although it is not an emergency, the problem should be addressed as soon as possible. If baby teeth are not extracted, this can lead to various dento-maxillary abnormalities, such as tooth crowding, narrow dental arches, reverse bite.

EXTRACTION OF MILK TEETH

If the baby tooth becomes mobile and the permanent one continues to erupt, the baby tooth will fall out and the situation will improve on its own. But if the permanent tooth erupts completely behind the milk tooth, its root will not resorb and the tooth will persist on the arch.

In most cases, the dentist will extract the baby tooth and create space for the complete eruption of the permanent tooth. Usually, the permanent tooth will take over its normal position on the arch in a few weeks or months.

INSTALLATION OF THE ORTHODONTIC APPARATUS

In other cases, even if the baby tooth is extracted, not enough space is created for the permanent tooth. Thus, the permanent tooth cannot move to its normal position. If this happens, the dentist will continue to be consulted and it is possible to opt for the orthodontic solution (dental appliance).
